Car Hire in Cyprus Advice and Information on Driving

First of all and somewhat important, in Cyprus we drive on the left. The same as the UK.

Secondly, and even more important, local drivers and driving rules do not have much in common. Motorbikes and scooters can be a nuisance as they follow no rules and tend to be all over the road. When you start to drive, take it easy with your car hire in Cyprus until you weigh up the driving style and local practices.

We have dual carriageways between all major towns and the speed limit is 100km. These carriageways are very quiet and a pleasure to drive on and you will see many rent a cars denoted by their RED number plates throughout the island. The police tend to spot hire cars from about 500m away and let you on your way since language may be a problem and it's the locals who cause most headaches on the road.

Busy times in-town are 7.30 a.m. and 1.30 p.m. when the schools open and close respectively, and around 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., when folks go home after a day's toil.

Mountain roads are wonderful to drive on but you will not find many petrol stations in the mountain areas. Make sure you fill up with fuel BEFORE long drives into the mountains.

Points to note when driving in Cyprus as some local drivers will:

  • Drive through the zebra crossing when people are walking across!

  • Drive through red lights

  • Turn left or right with no indication

  • Use their mobile when driving their car!

  • Not drive around roundabouts correctly. Take care on approaching and driving on roundabouts. Many accidents occur on roundabouts.

  • Park haphazardly as there are NO parking rules.

Advice on Car Hire in Cyprus

They are many international and local car hire firms. Here are some tips and advice on renting a car in Cyprus.

What car is best for you?

Take into account luggage capacity and needs, number of passengers, level of comfort required and the cost of running the car.

Inclusive rates

Hire a car with Damage Excess Waiver (DEW) which costs around £C2 - 3 per day and covers any excess paid in connection with any accident and will be refunded to you as long as your car hire company receives an accident report.

4x4s in Cyprus

If you are thinking of going off-road, then hire a 4x4 as there are wonderful drives through the countryside where a 4x4 is a must.

Fixed mileage

If you are traveling long distances in Cyprus, hire a car with fixed mileage.

Select the best car for your needs.

Fuel in Cyprus

Diesel is widely used in Cyprus. Take care when filling up as we have had occasions when diesel has been put into our petrol car, all 30 litres! Not fun.

Notes to keep when hiring your car

  • Make sure the car insurance covers you and your family for all your needs

  • Name and details of the car hire company

  • What happens in the event of a breakdown or accident?

  • Will the car hire office be open when you arrive?

  • Deposits to pay when collecting the car?

  • Provide the car firm with your name, flight details and arrival time

  • How and where is the car to be returned and in what condition. With or without petrol?

  • Know the local driving rules! (We will add another page to our web site on this subject A.S.A.P.)

Collecting the car/vehicle: check it thoroughly before you receive the vehicle.
