Work Permit in Cyprus Who Needs One?

A work permit in Cyprus are not required by European Union (EU) member nationals since Cyprus joined the EU on 1 May 2004. However, if you are planning to take up employment in a professional capacity, for example as a lawyer, accountant, doctor, etc., you will be required to pass written exams in Greek.

Bearing in mind that you will be competing directly with the local work force, unless you speak Greek your chances are not so good. Many EU citizens work privately in Cyprus using their own skills and work experience in a wide field such as information technology (IT), tourism and specialist areas that are in demand. European Union Citizens may enter Cyprus with only their Passports.

EU passport holders many enter Cyprus without a work permit and look for work for up to 90 days. If you are planning to stay for more than 90 days, you must apply for a temporary residence permit at least one month before the 90 days elapse or, preferably, as soon as you enter Cyprus. Most employers will arrange the work permit in Cyprus for you. It can be a bit difficult filling out all the forms and complying with all the regulations (unless you instruct a lawyer to assist you in this aspect).

Non-European Citizens need a Work Permit before they travel to Cyprus.

Non-European Union citizens must apply for a work permit from Cyprus before they arrive here and the Ministry of Labour in Cyprus must be satisfied that a Cypriot or EU citizen is not available to do the job applied for!

There are Two Types of Work Permits: Executive and Non-Executive.

Executive refers to company directors or partners and managers of international companies whose company offices are in Cyprus.

Non-executive refers to other managerial, professional, administrative, technical and clerical staff. Work permits are normally issued for one year.
