The Serenity of Latchi and Polis
The areas surrounding Latchi and Polis are possibly the most serene and idyllic in Cyprus. Okay, this is only our opinion; however, this area is relatively unspoiled and so beautiful with spectacular contrasts of nature where the blue Mediterranean Sea meets the green steep mountains of Akamas National Park.
Latchi was once a working harbour where my wife's uncle worked as a customs officer. In those days some 30 years ago, we would spend the day in Latchi, which then was just the harbour and a few restaurants. Over the years, Latchi has grown but still keeps its natural environment at the heart of its growth. There is a footpath along the beach, great to stretch your legs whilst taking in the beauty and fresh sea breeze.
The Baths of Aphrodite
Further along the coast are the Baths of Aphrodite where the road ends and Akamas National Park starts. Legend has the Goddess of love and beauty, Aphrodite, bathing in the natural baths under the waterfall surrounded by shady trees. You can drive into the Akamas peninsula, but only with a 4x4, and you need to be an experienced 4x4 driver as the terrain is not for the faint hearted. Alternatively, take a tour into the Akamas peninsula with a tour company with their 4x4, guides and drivers. The peninsula is an area of unparalleled natural beauty with deep gorges, a wild landscape and wide sandy bays. It is also an area of great biodiversity and ecological significance and home to 530 plant species, 126 of which are endemic to Cyprus. The variety of fauna is equally impressive; there are 168 birds, 12 mammals, 20 reptiles and 16 butterfly species.
Polis has always been the main town in this area and we travel there every summer with the family to camp in the woods next to the beach. This is a Government organized-campsite with space for around 500 tents. There are showers and laundry rooms, with a restaurant on the beachfront. We really enjoy staying in Polis and travelling around the area. The sea is just so much warmer than where we live in Limassol, and so clear. When we are swimming around Latchi and Polis, it's hard to want to leave the sea as it is just so comfortable. We are always amazed at the sea off the Latchi and Polis Cyprus coast a little piece of heaven on our doorstep.
Villages of Latchi and Polis Area
Inland, the villages are just so charming. Droushia and Inia are our favourites, although you should visit as many villages as time allows, seeing Cyprus and all its traditions. Further north, the road runs along the coast through the villages of Arkaga to Pomas and on to the end of the road at Kato Pyrgos where the Turkish chaps stop us from going any further north.
