Larnaca Cyprus - Information - Emerging Market

Larnaca is the third largest town in Cyprus with a population of around 100,000. Cyprus' main international airport is in Larnaca, with Paphos having the second largest. Cyprus has different name spellings for some of it towns (Paphos-Pafos, & Limassol-Lemesos), The same is true of Larnaca, which is also spelt as Larnaka and known locally as Scala. Confused?

During the day you will find the very busy Larnaka town centre has lots to offer selling anything from fruit and vegetables to hand made goods. The lace products are of great quality and are ideal for taking home as presents for family and friends. Leonardo da Vinci visited the famous lace village of Lefkaria: near Larnaca and reputedly took a large piece of lace that he placed in the Catholic Church in Milan.

There are a large selection of bars, restaurants and taverns in Larnaca where you can enjoy a meal or just pop in for a well-earned drink after a busy day shopping. The sea front has a lovely array of tropical palm trees, making it the ideal place to sit and relax whilst soaking up the glorious sunshine, although, we tend to eat away from the main tourist area (in all towns) because that is where you can find traditional Cypriot food at cheaper prices and not just egg and bacon type food which is fine, if that's your personal taste. There are also water sports available for the more energetic holidaymaker and plenty of taverns and bars along the sea front if you just want to relax and check out the local scenery in Larnaca. Cyprus holds many varied attractions for all its visitors. The authentic charm of Larnaca lies in its being very much a Cypriot town in its origins, customs and ways. Although many modern day influences have been absorbed into its makeup and are forever knocking on its door, Larnaca remains very Cypriot.

It costs around 60 Cyprus pounds to make the dive beneath the waters off Larnaca's coast to visit the wreck of the Zenobia cargo ship (one of the top ten dives in the world). Take care if you are to dive to the Zenobia as lives have been lost. You must be a qualified diver and only dive with qualified company instructors/divers who have a decompression chamber and regulated certificates. In addition, as any diver knows, wreck diving requires skill, expertise and above all else, great care. Another point on safety: when hiring boats, diving gear and anything potentially dangerous, make sure the company you hire the equipment from is fully qualified, licensed and insured.

Take a visit to Salt lake which you will fly over on your way into Larnaka airport. If you visit in the cooler months, you will find this the home of many birds in particular flamingos. Larnaca and the Salt Lake have so much history with Lazarus, who Jesus raised from the dead, becoming the Bishop of Larnaca where his empty tomb is located in the Church of St. Lazarus. A point of interest, many local Cypriot surnames are derived from Lazarus; Lazarides, Lazarou Hadjilazarou.

Over the last two years, Laranca town and the surrounding areas have slowly become the emerging real estate centre in Cyprus with $2 billion investment in roads, telecommunications, a new airport, and above all else, a new championship 18-hole golf course to be opened in 2009/2010 near Terserfanou on the outskirts of Larnaca. Cyprus property for sale, especially investment and off-plan near the golf course, have rapidly sold out before a brick or piece of concrete had been laid. Such is the demand for all types of property, houses, villas, apartments and penthouses in Larnaca.

Larnaca is full of history with many places to visit including Choirocoitia the oldest Neolithic settlement, the church of Angeloktisti, the museum of Palaeontology and Marine life, Larnaca Medieval Fort Museum and so much more. Under Turkish rule, Larnaca became a trading center. During the 17th and 18th centuries, Larnaca flourished as a commercial center with foreign consuls, and later  in 1878, the British  leased Cyprus from Turkey.
